How Ghana's cocoa price is set
Cocobod announces a guaranteed producer price at the opening of each main-crop season, usually between August and October, and can revise it mid-season. The price is quoted per tonne and per bag, using the Ghanaian convention of sixteen bags to the tonne. Licensed buying companies must pay farmers at least this price, which is why the figure matters more to Ghanaian growers than the futures price in New York or London.
The producer price follows the world market with a lag, in both directions. When world cocoa spiked toward record levels, Cocobod raised the price twice in 2025; when the world price fell back sharply, the committee cut it in February 2026 — the price currently in force.
