African stock exchanges, explained.
How many stock exchanges are there in Africa?
This page lists 32 African stock exchanges, of which Mansa Markets carries live price data for 21. The count varies by source because two exchanges, the BRVM and the BVMAC, are single regional markets serving eight West African and six Central African countries respectively; South Africa hosts several licensed exchanges alongside the JSE; and a number of smaller markets trade only bonds, or trade on a call-over basis rather than continuously.
What is the largest stock exchange in Africa?
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in South Africa is the largest African stock exchange by market capitalisation and by number of listed companies. The Egyptian Exchange (EGX), the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and the Casablanca Stock Exchange (CSE) follow it as the continent's other major markets.
Which African stock exchange serves more than one country?
The BRVM (Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières), based in Abidjan, is a single exchange serving eight West African countries that share the CFA franc: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. One listing therefore gives exposure across eight economies with no currency risk between them.
Can I get live prices from African stock exchanges?
Yes. Mansa Markets publishes live and end-of-day prices, benchmark index levels, corporate disclosures and historical data for every exchange listed on this page, on the web and through the Mansa Markets API.
