Key facts

  • Best performer of 2026 so far: Nigeria (NGX All-Share Index, +55.7% local, +65.0% USD).
  • Weakest performer of 2026 so far: Malawi (MSE All Share Index, -14.1% local, -14.2% USD).
  • 10 of 17 African indices are beating the S&P 500 (+9.3% YTD) in US-dollar terms.
  • Rankings are ordered by USD return, so cross-currency comparisons stay honest; a market can rally in local terms and still lose dollar investors money when its currency slides.

Methodology

Year-to-date returns compare each index's latest official closing level against its last close of 2025; one-year returns use the last close on or before the same calendar date a year ago. US-dollar returns divide the index by the local currency's USD exchange rate at both ends of the window, so currency moves are fully reflected. Closing levels come from Mansa Markets' index history database — the same daily-refreshed series that powers the index comparison tool — with each market's "as of" date shown next to its level. Zimbabwe is ranked on local-currency return only: repeated currency redenominations make a continuous USD series meaningless. This page re-ranks automatically as new closes arrive; cite it as "Mansa Markets, African Stock Markets Performance Rankings".
